Course content

Swim England’s Safeguarding CPD is bespoke and reflects the needs of a pool environment. The course will help you to understand:

  • What child safeguarding and child protection means
  • Key government legislation in relation to safeguarding and protecting children
  • Swim England’s safeguarding policies and procedures
  • The types, signs and symptoms of child abuse
  • How to respond to possible signs of child abuse and take appropriate action if concerns arise.

Swim England has linked up with the NSPCC and is accredited to deliver the Time to Listen module, which is aimed at Club Welfare Officers. The Time to Listen programme provides the opportunity to acquire key knowledge necessary for the role and responsibilities of a CWO, to adopt a child-focused approach to safeguarding and to learn about the action/s which should be taken should any incident occur. You must have completed an approved Safeguarding workshop to attend this course. You must be 18+ to attend.

The Swim England Time to Listen course is run for Welfare Officers at no cost to candidates, however, there is a cost to the region. Unfortunately, we have recently had a number of last minute cancellations or no-shows, and despite having a large reserves list, the lack of notice has meant places could not be filled. Due to this we have implemented a new TTL Booking Policy that outlines how our bookings work, our cancellation policy and our non-attendance policy.

This workshop is designed to further support experienced or new Club Welfare Officers in dealing with club issues surrounding the welfare of children in given situations. The workshop will build on knowledge already gained through attendance on both the Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Time to Listen workshops.

The workshop will include interactive breakout rooms and the chance to share good practice and ask questions. The workshop will last no more than 2 hours and will be delivered online via Zoom.

Swim England has launched the Child Safeguarding Online Basic Awareness course in conjunction with the Institute of Swimming as part of its ongoing commitment to create a safe environment for youngsters. Please note this course is not a substitute of the Swim England Safeguarding course.

It gives athletes, parents, coaches, teachers, volunteers, committee members and technical officials an opportunity to develop their knowledge of safeguarding – and how to respond to any concerns.

The resource also gives young volunteers who are under 18 the chance to develop their awareness of child safeguarding as they start out on their volunteering journey.

Swim England East Midlands take’s the welfare of all its members seriously.

The welfare of young and vulnerable swimmers is particularly important and we follow the recommendations included in Wavepower, Swim England’s Child Safeguarding Policy and Procedures manual.

The responsibility to safeguard children in our clubs lies will all those involved in the sport and is not the sole responsibility of any one person at club, county or national level.

If you need any support or advice on how to manage a welfare issue please contact your Club Welfare Officer or County Welfare Officer.  Alternatively, please visit our welfare page for further contacts and help.
